Wetlands and Waste Management Awareness Campaign

Overview: 

Wetlands and Waste Management Awareness Campaign by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) of Uganda is a campaign that runs on radio stations tagerting the common Ugandan. It’s geared towards demystifying and promoting vital environmental issues on wetlands in Uganda themed, Kuuma Obutonde Bw'Ensi.

Promotion Objectives:

  • Increase Awareness: Educate communities about the significance of wetlands and effective waste management practices.
  • Engage Communities: Encourage active participation through a call-in format, allowing listeners to express their views and ask questions related to environmental issues.
  • Promote Sustainable Practices: Foster understanding of sustainable practices that protect wetlands and manage waste effectively.

Methodology:

CBS Radio hosted special talk shows featuring NEMA officers.

  • Introducing the campaign to the audience
  • Discussing NEMA's initiatives regarding wetlands and waste management.
  • The show  included a Q&A session to enhance community awareness and engagement.
  • Each day, three callers participated by answering two questions related to wetlands and waste management.
  • Questions were curated by NEMA technical officers to ensure relevance and educational value.

Winners and Rewards:

  • Daily, one participant was selected as the winner.
  • At the end of the campaign, all the winners were invited to a special Meet & Greet event with NEMA's Executive Director, and they;
    • Engaged in discussions about wetlands and waste management.
    • Received branded gift hampers, which may include:
      • A stylish eco-friendly bag
      • A durable umbrella
      • A custom cup

Media Coverage:

NEMA invites the people of Uganda to tune in to a radio station every weekday evening on Kuuma Obutonde Bw'Ensi. Community members are be encouraged to participate, learn, and contribute to a greener Uganda by answering questions and standing a chance to win exciting prizes.

Outcome: 

The show ignited a passion for environmental stewardship across Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, fostered an informed and active community members dedicated to preserving our wetlands and managing waste responsibly.
