Ozone Project

The project is in line with the implementation of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer and those that cause global warming. The project premises on creating capacity building of refrigeration and air conditioning technicians who are the main users of the controlled substances (inter alia, hydro chlorofluorocarbons/HCFCs, hydrofluorocarbons/HFCs, and chlorofluorocarbons/CFCs), capacity building of law enforcement officers and importers, among others.

The project also looks at licensing of importers, among others. Some of the project achievements include.

  • A total of 300 RAC technicians (260 males and 40 females) in good RAC practices around the country and 39 RAC technicians (36 males and three females) in safe handling of HFC/ HCFC alternatives were trained.
  • Amelo Technical Institute and Kasese Youth Polytechnic were supported with state-of-the-art refrigeration and air conditioning training toolkits.
  • A total of 12 freezers to help in the training of RAC technicians in line with adopting hydrocarbons (HCs) were purchased and 12 importers (10 males and two females) were trained in licensing and quota system under the Montreal Protocol.
  • The technicians were also taken through the application process for authorization and the permitted quota for 2024, two importers submitted applications for authorization to import R-22 which is an HCFC. A study was also undertaken to establish the atmospheric concentration of substances controlled under the Montreal Protocol.
