NEMA received funding (USD8,000) from UNEP as the competent Authority for the Basel Convention to conduct a pilot project on management of single use plastics in the cities of Mbarara, Gulu, Mbale and the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. The single use plastics project is currently being conducted as a pilot project and will build on the existing studies conducted in the country. The project also has a provision for implementation of a pilot project on plastic management best practices in a community within Mbarara City.

The objective of the pilot project is to generate information on best practices that can be adopted for the management of single use plastics, in particular polyethylene and PET and awareness raising materials for public education on options for management of single-use plastics in order to facilitate the desired behavioural change among

communities.
