NEMA launches ESD Campaign through Newspapers in Education Platform

NEMA’s Public Education Department a one of the activities to implement the Education for Suitable Development (ESD) strategy, has entered into a partnership with the leading daily newspaper, The New Vision, to disseminate environment education messages through the weekly Newspaper in Education (NiE) Pull out.
The year-long partnership will see the Newspaper carry information promoting sustainable environmental stewardship in the weekly NiE pullout in form of opinions, illustrations, or any other presentation as established by both parties targeting young readers in the range of 7 – 16 years. On their part, NEMA will sponsor the dissemination and dispatch of 50 copies of the Newspaper to several schools weekly across the country.
While launching the NiE campaign, Soroti Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon. Herber Ariko welcomed the initiative and called upon NEMA to increase the coverage of dissemination of environmental information to the public especially among the young generation, as he highlighted, “They are change agents.”
The NEMA and New Vision team distributed hundreds of Newspapers to several pupils from different schools at the launch which was conducted to coincide with the inauguration of School Environment Education Competitions at Swaria Primary School in Soroti Municipality.
New Vision has been running the NiE initiative for over 10 years and their platform has attracted agencies and organization with different themes over the years. Apart from the 500 copies that will be distributed every week, the NiE pull out is also part of the main newspaper which has the biggest circulation, with 34,000 copies (according to the 2015 Audit Bureau of Circulation report) distributed daily.
